The Art of Illustration
When it comes to illustrating, the assumption can often be that it’s just a bit of doodling and colouring-in. Whilst it might seem that way, in reality it’s a process that involves not only incredible creativity, but is also an exercise in client relationships, ensuring that time and money are well spent.
Illustration, like many things, requires the right technical skills, practice and knowledge to successfully create compelling and effective visual narratives. The absence of any of these can result in a significant impact on the artistic vision and in the successful storytelling of the work.
The process of illustration is broken down into four key steps:
1. Exploring
Every illustrated project starts with a conversation and an idea. A strong brief ensures that both have been understood and the designer can begin their research, helping them become familiar with the subject matter and explore different styles that will compliment a that brief. A mood board is the perfect way to present the collection of findings and a great way to communicate a creative concept before a pen has even been picked up.
2. Sketching
With the mood board approved, a designer will begin the process of creating a set of bespoke images by providing initial, basic sketched ideas, also known as ‘scamps’. These scamps are often annotated, explaining the bigger picture (pun intended) as well as expanding on the concept as a whole. All of this is provided for comment, approval and amendments before moving to the next stage.
3. Refining
Choosing a colour palette that supports the respective brand, tone of voice and/or message is next. These colours are then applied in various shades, textures and effects (referred to as rendering) to detail and enhance the visual of the illustration. Depending on the complexity, there could be several layers of rendering applied.
4. Delivering
Nearing the end of the process, the designer will prepare the near finished, fully rendered version of the illustration for review and comment. This provides the opportunity to make any final adjustments to the design before it is finalised. Once approved the designer will prepare the illustration for its intended use, be this print or digital or across a variety of media, in the file formats required.
